Much Delayed: One Month!

It seems that, as soon as a baby is born, time and all concept of time is lost ;-). I had hoped and expected to be better at writing updates about Bennett, but it has been difficult! A lot of the issue is not having internet access (or cell phone reception, for that matter!) at my mom’s, where we recently relocated to for the summer.

Bennett is wonderful… He was four weeks old yesterday and I cannot believe that much time has passed already! He has a lot of “personality” already: facial expressions, noises. We have several nicknames for him, among which are “noise box”, “the milk monster”, and “burp-a-potamus”. He sleeps much of the day and MOST of the time sleeps about 5 hours straight in the night, though that is not always the case ;-). He has a pleasant demeanor and is very relaxed for the most part. The only time he really fusses is when he is hungry (and the few days of gas he experienced last week). He took to breast feeding right away, and I am pretty sure if he had it his way would eat all day (hence the “milk monster” nickname). Dad gave him his first bottle of pumped milk two days ago, which went well :-). He has no interest in pacifiers of any kind, but is “exploring” his thumb.

Bennett LOVES to snuggle… He is very cuddly and happy. We have noticed definite “gas smiles” and are so excited for the real thing!

We had his one month appointment and found out that he is now 10lbs, 5oz and 22.5 inches long! His head ALONE has grown 3cm! He has big hands and feet, much like his dad (he resembles Quinn all around, actually – I don’t see much of me in him yet!). His eyes really look like they will be blue, but that is common at first so we’ll have to see :-).

Bennett’s cousin Broc was born on Thursday, May 28 (18 days after Bennett). He was 7lb, 14oz and 20.5in long – beautiful and healthy! Although there was only a 2oz and ½ inch difference between Broc and Bennett at birth, you can clearly see the difference a couple weeks can make!

Bennett has had many visitors and has taken several trips already. My friend Kris made me a sling to carry him in, and I am able to do house work with Bennett attached and go for walks. He has also been shopping, out to eat and in the car seat for two hours at a time on a few occasions (he really likes the car seat and falls asleep instantly!).

We got a “sound sleeper” as a present from Mark and Kelly. It’s a great little “machine” that makes different nature sounds to help babies sleep. There is one option of ocean waves, and the first time I heard it I was reminded of living in Hawaii. It brought me back to a time that a group of friends and I went camping on the North Shore, in just sleeping bags right by the ocean. It made me think about the fact that Quinn and I have been really fortunate to experience MUCH in life before entering “parenthood”, and now truly feels like the perfect time to have become parents. We don’t feel like we “missed out” on anything, and the amount of love we have to give to this little boy just can’t be measured.

Hillary, Bennett is precious and I love reading about all the newborn things he is doing. It's so sweet and brings back recent memories.. They grow up unbelievably fast. IT's crazy. Are you going back to work? How much time off do you have?
Take care,
Kim
